The Ultimate BBQ Showdown East vs. West II
March 18 - 19, 2011
Wildomar, California
What a great weekend for a
BBQ! There was a threat of rain, but it only sprinkled
a little bit on Saturday morning. This was our second
year competing at Wildomar. The city goes all out for
this event, with the Rotary Club supporting the BBQers
and the vendors alike. Funds from the event benefit the
Wildomar parks system.
We were set up in the
street in an industrial park area. Steve had left early
on Friday morning and Ted and Ardith came around noon.
We set up camp and enjoyed being outside and visiting
with fellow BBQers. On Saturday vendors were set up
behind us and the Wildomar people came out to support
this worthy cause.
One of the features at
this event was a BBQ contest called “Kids Q”. There
were 13 teams that ranged in age from 4 to 16. Each
contestant barbequed three hot dogs for the judges to
taste. Steve sponsored Ryan Malone, age 9, from “Little
Danger BBQ” in this event. As you can see above, Ryan
made four hot dogs and gave one to Steve to enjoy.
One hot dog entry from a
5-year-old girl was slathered with peanut butter and
chocolate! According to the judges they were pretty
good. The winner received a trophy and a check for $100
while the other 12 entries got second place and a
medal. It was a great event!
Steve entered the beef rib
contest in addition to the four meats. He did great
finishing 4th place out of 22 teams. Overall
All Hogs finished 34th out of 56 teams, with
an 11th in chicken, 49th in ribs,
14th in pork, 42nd in brisket.
This event was a great
start on the BBQ circuit for 2011; we look forward to
the rest of the year traveling the state. Thanks to
Henry Silvestre for a wonderful event. We too enjoyed
visiting with Nicole Silvestre and little Henry on
Saturday, such a nice family. Thanks to Kelly and
Kathleen McIntosh and
Gene Goycochea for being the representatives. Looking
forward to next year.
