Tom’s Farms Wild West BBQ Showdown

December 30, 2010 to January 1, 2011

Wildomar, California

Tom’s Farms started out as an idea from Henry Silvestre to have 2 contest on one weekend with one counting as the last Team of the Year event in 2010 and the first Team of the Year contest in 2011.  All was going well when it was determined that Tom’s Farms couldn’t have the event after all.  Henry went into action and talked to the Mayor of Wildomar.  It was decided that the city would host the BBQ contest with the proceeds going to the Parks and Recreations of Wildomar.

Weather in December/January was very nice in the daytime, but really cold at night.  It was a first to wake up to frost all over the tablecloth.  It warmed up to the mid 50’s in the daytime.  We didn’t put up the tarp and Steve said we looked like lizards basking in the sun for warmth.

There was a big response with 45 teams the first day and 43 teams the second contest.  The venue was behind an Albertson’s shopping center.  The center had everything that you might want, Denny’s, a Pizza parlor, and an Ace hardware store.  Steve discovered that he had a leak in his BBQ trailer water system and headed for the Ace hardware.  Ted was spotted later heading in the same direction to check out the “man stuff”.  We had great neighbors at this contest with lots of BBQ friends near by.  Vince came on Friday for the first contest and was a big help.  There was an Iron Chef contest in which All Hogs entered.  The mystery ingredient was 2 zucchini’s; luckily Steve had a recipe that he had used at the American Royal a few years ago, so Ardith and Steve headed for Albertson’s for some ingredients.

In the last contest of 2010 we received 11th overall out of 45 teams with a 10th in chicken, 13th in ribs, 4th in pork, 39th in brisket, and 1st place in the Iron Chef contest.  In the first contest of 2011 we received 4th overall out of 43 teams with a 1st in chicken, 6th in ribs, 11th in pork, and 16th in brisket.

We wish to thank Henry for a great contest along with Kelly and Kathleen McIntoish who served as reps for both contests.

The Team of the Year winners for 2010 have been announced and it has been a great year for All Hogs go to Heaven with an overall finish in 4th place out of 79 teams, chicken 3rd out of 96 teams, ribs 4th out of 90 teams, pork 1st out of 89 teams, and a tie in brisket at 13th out of 88 teams.
