Tempe BBQ Island Competition
December 4 - 5, 2009
Tempe, Arizona
What a fun event this
was! It was the second time that Steve had been to
Tempe as he attended the IBCA March event. Ted, Ardith,
Toni, and Ron joined him this time as it was a KCBS
event. Everyone arrived on Friday to a chilly day in
Tempe, which is unusual for this time of year. We set
up our site and decorated the BBQ trailer for the
holidays. Some of the other BBQ’ers went all out with
their decoration, and it was fun to walk around and see
the other competitor displays.
This event was the four
meat categories and also two “anything butts”. This
time Steve did pork chops and they were delicious as the
judges awarded All Hogs go to Heaven 1st place in that
category. The other “anything butt” was beans, in which
Ron worked for a couple of days to get the beans
perfected. The “anything butt” categories are a lot of
fun because it lets teams be creative with unique
turn-ins that will “wow” the judges.
On Saturday, the four
meats were cooking and it felt good to stand by the
smoker to take the chill out of the air. Toni was busy
with the garnish boxes, while Steve and Ron worked on
the cooking. Ted was standing by ready to make the long
walk to the judge’s tent with the turn-in boxes. One
thing that BBQ contests are is a team effort.
In the meat categories we
received 15th overall out of 33 teams with 19th
in chicken, 11th in ribs, 10th in
pull pork, and 24th in brisket. This was our
last contest of the year. All Hogs go to Heaven placed
3rd in the World in pull pork and Team of the
year in pull pork for the California BBQ Association.
What a great accomplishment!
We
wish to thank Mike Reimann for another outstanding
contest. Using his organizational skills the contest
are always top notch. Kelly and Kathleen MacIntosh were
the representatives and did another outstanding job in
keeping everything running smoothly. We look forward to
this event next year. |
