Sunburst BBQ cook-off
to feed the troops
Los Alamitos, California
December 12 - 13, 2008
This IBCA contest was to
be held at a military base in Los Alamitos, California
two weeks before Christmas. Ted and Ardith left
Lancaster mid day to beat the traffic as did Toni and
Ron from San Bernardino. They both ended up at the base
about the same time. Steve left around 3:00 pm for the
long drive with heavy Friday night traffic. He and Lou
arrived around 6:00 pm. Just something about a military
base that makes you proud to be an American. On
Saturday, there were several military groups marching.
The first of four turn-ins started at 11:00 am and
continued at 1 hour intervals until all were completed.
After the final turn in
all the cookers donated meat to feed the troops. There
was a large group of mostly dependents as many of the
service men and women had shipped out a couple of day
before the contest. Santa and Mrs Claus came on the
fire truck to give gifts to the children present. Later
in the afternoon you could see a formation of troops
carrying away the left over meat back to the barracks.
In the awards ceremony we
finished 5th out of 16 teams, with a 4th
in chicken, 2nd in ribs, and 8th in pull
pork. It was a great way to end 2008 with BBQ friends
and families. Thanks to Tom Emery for setting up the
contest and awards ceremony.
