Wayout
West BBQ
July 3 - 4, 2009
Stockton,
California
This was the first Wayout
West BBQ KCBS competition held in Stockton in
conjunction with an ongoing event call “the taste of San
Joaquin”. It was an adventure for our team to get to
this event. Ted and Ardith were in Oregon for their
son-in-laws fishing tournament the week before, so they
took some extra time and toured Oregon in order to get
back to Stockton by the next weekend. Steve left
Lancaster on Thursday and drove to his niece Julie and
husband Rick Smith’s home in Discovery Bay as the
gathering point for the team the night before the BBQ.
Toni and Ron would be flying from Ontario to Sacramento
on Friday, renting a car and driving to Stockton. The
teams were asked to vend something other than their
competition meat. Steve got together with Julie and
decided to do corn, but not just any old corn, we did
“Brentwood sweet corn”. Julie said it was world famous
and everyone would recognize the name. We got to the
BBQ area and sure enough everyone that saw the sign
commented on the “Brentwood” corn. It was a great
choice!
The day of the event was
busy as usual for the turn in meats, but now we had to
shuck 150 ears of corn too. That was a lot of fun and
reminded Ted and Ron of the good old days back east
where they grew up. Julie and Vicki her neighbor from
Discovery Bay came for the day and turned out to be a
great help with the corn and corn sales. We couldn’t
have done it without their help.
In the contest, we
finished with a Reserve Grand Champion! It was great we
got 6th in Chicken, 3rd in Ribs,
18th in Pull pork, and 2nd in
Brisket to finish 2nd overall. At this event
history was made by Slap Your Daddy BBQ as they received
1st place in every single meat category.
Amazing!
The sponsors of the BBQ
event had a raffle for a smoker BBQ and Ron bought 5
tickets after the awards, they were to have the drawing
shortly. Toni had call home to get her messages, only
to find that Ron had won the smoker. The organizers had
called San Bernardino to tell Ron that he had won. So
they went back to the awards area and sure enough he had
the winning ticket. It’s a beautiful smoker with all
the bells and whistles. Now the challenge was to get it
back home. We found a way to put it on the back of
Steve’s BBQ trailer and Ted had car straps, so he,
Steve, and Ron cinched it down. It rode perfectly all
the way back home. It was a lucky day indeed!
Special Thanks to Ben
Lobenstein and Ric Gilbert as the organizers for this
event along with Kelly and Kathleen MacIntosh who were
the representatives. What a great team to run this
super event.
