Stagecoach
Music Festival
April 25 -
26, 2009
Indio,
California
Wow, where to begin with
this event, it’s three contests in one filled with
action all around. Steve, Lou Ingleheart, Ted and Ardith
left Lancaster on Thursday 23 April for Indio. Ted and
Ardith needed to stop by Toni and Ron’s to pick up some
items for the booth decoration. We met them at a Denny’s
and were there only about 5 minutes before Lou called to
say they just got on the 215 and were not stopping and
were we ready to go? So we hurried and got back on the
freeway just as they appeared in the rearview mirror.
Ted led the way in the truck, Ardith in the car, and
Steve and Lou with the BBQ trailer. We made it to Indio
and the check in station and all went well getting our
wristbands to get in. Parking passes were an issue, but
it was resolved quickly.
We set up the trailer and
camper and waited for Toni and Ron to come on Friday
with the rest of the decorating material to finish off
the booth. The booth turned out really well as Toni
spent a lot of time putting the ideas together. She had
everything tailor made to put in place. Lots of
attendees commented on how nice the booth was.
Such a nice venue at the
polo grounds with all the palm trees and grass. It was
fun to just sit and watch as other contestants arrived
throughout the day.
On Saturday, the first
contest was sponsored by the International Barbecue
Cookers Association (IBCA) followed by a Kansas City
Barbecue Society (KCBS) contest. The turn-ins were
listed on a sheet of paper with the 20 minute and 10
minute time frames accounted for. Talk about being
hectic at times, but we got through the event, then it
was on to the people’s choice. Each team received pork
and brisket to cook for the people’s choice, in addition
to the competition meat that had to also be cooked.
Steve declared that we would donate all of our people’s
choice money in memory of Monica Benedict, a fellow
BBQ’er that recently died of breast cancer. A check was
presented to Scottie Johnson (cancersucks.com) on 30
April from All Hogs go to Heaven.
At the awards on 25 April
for IBCA we received a 4th in chicken and 26th
in brisket out of 52 teams. In the KCBS contest we
received 6th place overall out of 52 teams,
with a 31st in chicken, 28th in
ribs, 5th in pork, and 1st in
brisket. At the awards on 26 April for KCBS we received
19th overall out of 50 teams, with 34th
in chicken, 44th in ribs, 4th in
pork, and 5th in brisket.
Special thanks to Tom
Emery for a great event. He never stopped working with
all the teams to make sure all went smoothly. We would
also like to thank Kelly and Kathleen McIntosh, Lynn
Shivers, Merl and Carol Whitebook for all of their time
and effort. Looking forward to next year!
