Golden State
Championship BBQ (IBCA)
Hesperia Civic Plaza
Park
June 27 – 28 2008
This was the first annual
Golden State Championship BBQ (IBCA) held in Hesperia,
California. The event was to celebrate the City of
Hesperia’s 20 year anniversary. The day was filled with
community activities including a parade for the kids
with decorated wagons and strollers. The BBQ competition
was in conjunction with all of these activities. Steve,
Ted, and Ardith left Lancaster around 1:30 pm on Friday
as it’s an hour and 20 minute drive to Hesperia. We
arrived around 3:00 pm to see that Tom Emery had
everything totally organized. We parked with power
ready for our use, and soon Kathleen and Kelly came by
to inspect the meat. The wind was blowing, but coming
from Lancaster where the wind is the norm we felt right
at home.
Toni and Ron came later in
the evening and Ron helped Steve prepare the meat for
the next day. Toni and Ardith made preparations for the
dessert contest. Since this was a new dessert that we
hadn’t entered before there was lots of planning going
on. The next day went well even if the wind was blowing
about 25 miles per hour. We put up the tarp for some
shade as the temperatures were getting high, and hoped
that it wouldn’t get blown over.
At the awards we received 6th
overall out of 21 teams. We received a 1st in
chicken, 8th in ribs, 9th in pull
pork, and 7th in brisket. Dessert took a 2nd
place. We wish to thank Tom Emery for the great job in
organizing this event, Kelly and Kathleen Macintosh for
their professionism in running the BBQ contest, and also
the City of Hesperia for all the time and effort they
put into making the BBQ contest and the day a great
success.
