Red Hot & Real BBQ Championship
clovis, California
September 19 - 20, 2008
The Red Hot & Real BBQ Championship is a
competition held in cooperation with the City of Clovis.
This 4th annual event drew over 70,000 people of all
ages. The City of Clovis has prepared an entire area for
the BBQ so there was plenty of room for the biggest of
teams from all over the western states. This event is
sanctioned by the Kansas City Barbeque Society.
The Clovis
competition is one of the best events on the BBQ
circuit. This year the weather was great and the venue
even better. Ted and Ardith left on Thursday and Steve
and Vince left Lancaster on Friday morning and still
beat them to Clovis. Toni and Ron had to work and would
not be attending.
Upon
arrival we met Kim Walton and she directed us to our
spot. After getting set up we had planned on going to
the QN4U BBQ House for lunch, and what a treat that
was! It’s a must see if you ever get to Clovis, the
décor is wonderful and the food outstanding.
Early
morning on Saturday, Steve and Vince started fixing the
meat for the contest. Ardith and Ted tended to the
dessert entry and things were right on
schedule. Cousin’s Gloria Pettigrew from Hanford and
Charlene and Duwaine Branch from Porterville joined us
before the first turn-in. They enjoyed sampling each
turn-in as they were entered.
We
finished 13th overall out of 42 teams. We
placed 11th in Chicken, 24th in
Ribs, 25th in Pull Pork, and 17th
in Brisket. The Anything Butt category we placed 3rd
out of 23 teams.
We wish to
thank, always professionals, Kelly and Kathleen
MacIntosh for being the reps for this event. Kim and
Brent Walton thanks so much for all the time and effort
you put in to this event to make it a success. Always a
lot of fun!
