Bakersfield’s Biggest Baddest BBQ Championship
May 21 – 22, 2010
Bakersfield, California
This was the second annual contest for Bakersfield
Biggest Baddest BBQ Championship. 100% of net proceeds
benefit the Children's Medical Center (Children's
Miracle Network) at Bakersfield Memorial Hospital. The
contest was held at Stramler Park, a very interesting
place to find. Everyone’s GPS and Map quest had some
different way of getting to this park. Most everyone
that we talked too missed a turn some place and had to
back up and regroup. Think we have it now so next year
we will be able to get it right the first time.
Steve, Ted, and Ardith left Lancaster around 9 am and
was it ever windy! The wind had been blowing in
Lancaster for the past 2 weeks around 30 miles per hour
most of the time. We drove the back way into Tehachapi
and did by pass some of the wind. It was even windy in
Bakersfield but not as bad as Lancaster. Toni and Ron
drove from San Bernardino and saw a big 18 wheeler
overturned in Mojave due to the wind.
We had a chance to eat at the Wool Growers for lunch on
Friday. It’s a Basque style set up with salad, beans,
french bread, summer salad, french fries and your
entrée, delicious!
The venue at this BBQ contest was great; we were on
grass and had an outstanding spot. We were next to
Smitty’s Smoke Patrol and Brazen BBQ. Both teams are so
nice and we enjoyed their company all weekend long. Our
cousin Charlene and husband Duwaine came from
Porterville for the day.
We did very well overall taking 4th out of 54
teams. We got 13th in chicken, 4th
in ribs, 1st in pull pork, and 31st
in brisket. We would like to thank Kelly and Kathleen
McIntosh for another outstanding judging event. Mike
George was a great promoter having everything the BBQ
teams would need when they needed it. We are definitely
looking forward to coming again next year.
