HavaBBQ London Bridge Competition
Lake Havasu, Arizona
February 25 – 26, 2011
The Daybreakers Lions
International had their second Kansas City BBQ
Association (KCBS) contest in Lake Havasu City, Arizona
and did a fantastic job of presenting the BBQ
community a 1st class, team-friendly
contest. They had a great turnout with over 78 teams
from several states coming together for the competition.
It was a beautiful ride
across the desert to Lake Havasu as all the rain gave
the desert a green hue. Ted and Ardith left on Thursday
ahead of Steve, Vince, and Doug who left on Friday
morning. Upon arrival on Friday morning Steve, Vince,
Doug, Ted, and Ardith ventured over to the IHOP, one of
the BBQ sponsor’s, for breakfast. After we returned to
the BBQ site we set up camp and enjoyed visiting with
our BBQ friends.
Saturday, was a busy day
getting all of the meats cooked and presented to the
judges on time. All day long we were hoping the rain
would not materialize as Steve’s wife Vicki and our
sister Kathy kept texting and telling us it was snowing
in southern California. Fortunately, the rain held off
until about 2:00 pm. Our friend Joyce Macheca from
Wickenburg, AZ came to visit us; we missed her mom, Joan
Bergner, this year. Rudy Gutierrez and family came to
visit both Friday eve and Saturday. Rudy and Steve have
known each other since they were teenagers. What a
great time we all had hearing the war stories from
yesteryear!
We finished 21st
out of 78 teams with a 41st in chicken, 44th
in ribs, 14th in pork, and 16th in
brisket. We were very excited that the Brazen Boys from
California won Grand Champion! Steve had to make good
on a bet that he, John, and Brad had made, for who
placed better overall and for who placed higher in
brisket. Congratulations John and Brad!
We
wish to thank all the representatives and the
Daybreakers Lions for an outstanding event and a great
weekend. We look forward to coming back next year.
